XTZ750 project

Postby Uncle Dave » Fri Mar 22, 2013 4:19 pm

Been looking for a XTZ750 Super Tenere for a couple of years but never found the right one and being quite rare they are hard to find. Someone told me they only sold 300 units in Aus, I suppose they were ahead of their time being the original multi cylinder Adv bike along with the Honda Africa Twin which was never sold here. I had to go to Adelaide to get this one.... :problem:

Day after I towed it home.

I plan on taking this to the Tenere Tragics ride to Longreach in April so I've got a lot of work to do. Firstly it needs to be reliable, then I can concentrate on performance mods while still keeping it looking original.

First off it needs to be registered so.......

The brake lines fitted to it are illegal so I purchased some ADR'd braided units from HEL Performance in Brisbane.

Old.

New.

New front and rear tyres needed for rego too as the old ones were cracking on the sidewall..

Then Blue Slip time.

Passed without a hitch.
Image

So, time for my first ride. Fingers crossed there are no surprises.

All is good, nothing major wrong apart from needing suspension and a tune.

Got a package from Germany.
Image

Raising links for the rear suspension. About 25mm rise. :shifty:
Image

Chain slider for the swingarm was U/S so a new 'pattern part' was sourced.
Image

Carb rebuild kits with the 'right jets' for the 750. This currently has TRX-850 carbs and jetting.
Image

And new CV slides and diaphragms.
Image

Lastly new inlet manifolds to replace the perished originals.

Next up luggage racks.

Going to copy the style of these I have for the 1200.
Image

But I'm going stainless steel.

Loops made first.
Image

Offer them up to the bike.
Image

Then make up mounts off the rear footpegs and start welding.
Image

Image

Most of this was done freehand. Do one side then copy for the other, but they're not symetrical because of the single sided exhaust.
Image

Stainless steel is so nice to work with.
Image

Rear loop added for strength.
Image

All up it comes in less than 3kg's and also strengthens up the subframe. :thumb:

Reliability.

These are renowen for burning out regulator/rectifiers and although mine was still charging it didn't look great.
Image
Image

The wiring wouldn't have lasted long so another order, this time from the UK.
Image

New regulator/rectifier off a later model TRX/TDM...
Image

Charges now at a constant 14.0 volts and hopefully will be able to shed all the heat generated with the new design.

Wheels.

When inspecting the bike thoroughly I found the front rim had a crack along the seam weld, common on older bikes through age and fatigue.
Image

So I ordered a pair of SM Pro Platinum wheels with heavy duty SS spokes. Took a couple of weeks to have them drilled for the Yamaha spoke number and pattern (angle etc), then this week I had them installed.
Image

I wanted to keep the original size and style, 3.00x17 rear and 1.85x21 front. But SM Pro don't make a 3.00x17 so I went 3.5x17. At least this way I 'may' be able to run a 150/70 tyre instead of factory 140/80.
Image

Image

I put an old 150 section tyre off my 1200 on the new rim to check for swingarm clearance.
Image

Should be enough room. This is with the wheel pushed all the way forward on the adjusters. If it isn't enough I can add a link to the chain to move it back.
Image

Mmm, fat tyre.

Extra fuel capacity.

As I plan to do some long distance riding out west I need as much range as I can get. I'd been running this Nomad 7.5lt tank on my 1200 for a while so swapped it over to the 750.
Image

With the main tank modified to hold 30lt's from the standard 26, I now have about 37 litres which will give me a reliable 550-600km range! :D

I decided that it wouldn't be right to have a Honda muffler on my Yamaha for the upcoming Tenere Tragics ride so I spent the morning doing this.

This was on my 1200, but is much better placed here! :thumb:
