Topo maps for magellan explorist XL, mudrat assist?

Post by wibbo » Sun Jul 27, 2008 2:48 pm

Well i purchased an explorist XL, on ebay from the states. I was tossing up whether to get the magellan or the garmin 276 or zumo. Not that I don't want to spend another $390 on the topo maps but can anyone suggest a cheaper alternative to get the topo maps. I saw mudrats post on the gps aussie site and wondered if he had any joy. I know the topo map comes on a SD card which is allegedly locked? (the unit cost me $340 to get to my door)

Yes, DiscoverAus Topo is locked to the serial number of the SD card
The GPS will not read a copied card
Mapping is 2006

DiscoverAus is available on CD for $229
This version has mapping from 2003 without the contours
You write it to your own card

no joy with the topo version yet, still working on it :)

I'm currently use a combination of DiscoverAus (CD version), OziExplorer, NatMap Raster Maps, Google maps and Google Earth.
I might ride like crap, but I'm having fun, I think
