APC Rally - someone explain it to me please.

Post by Whitey » Fri Aug 03, 2012 12:56 am

OK, so I've done zero research on this, but from what I gather, you pay a fee ($1000 ?) for a GPS route which takes you around the country over a two week period. Is that it ?

I'm sure it's a lovely route, but I can't help but wonder why you just wouldn't grab a few mates, plan your own 2 week ride, and save yourself a grand.
Am I missing something ? Is it for people who can't plan rides ? Does the rally provide access to otherwise inaccessible land ? Free beer ?

Signed Confused.

I'd like to think that any profits would go to a good cause, so at least you could feel all warm and fuzzy about coughing up that lazy GRAND!!!!!!??????

Its a "for profit" money making venture for the persons running it as far as I know.

Maybe the "Wing it" rally. Pay me $1000 and go riding for two weeks without any plan at all. If you make it home, you get an official ORE "I winged it and survived" Certificate of Achievement.

You guys aren't helping me at all here.

I'm with you.
I can't seem to find anything they offer that would make it special. Next years early bird price is $1235 which includes $115 for insurance (what exactly are they insuring) and they don't mention that you get access to private property or any other drawcard. Plus on top of that you have to organise your own accommodation (pubs or camping). It doesn't appear to include fuel (after your first tank full) or any meals or anything except a GPS route with easy and difficult choices of routes.

I think some of the fun is wasting time at work planning your own route and when the plans fail in the middle of nowhere (because of a locked gate or closed road) then you can make it up on the fly and find a new way around as part of the adventure.

Whitey it's about time for an ORE Rally. We pay $20 and get a place to head to and a tee shirt when we get there.
Cheers

Maybe when its over, someone that went may be able to give us some insight as to its advantages and why you would pay $1000 to participate.

I'm not sure...

APC rally provides a fair bit of private land and station tracks to ride on and a fuel dump en route...

Also provides a form of backup by constant monitoring of Spot trackers and providing limited assistance where they can by "helping" and managing to get parts out to stranded riders etc by getting other riders carry parts in if possible...

I'd pay to do it but it's really designed for smaller bikes....
