Fuel usage for 660 Tenere in Simpson

Post by Tenere Andre » Sun Jan 15, 2012 10:30 pm

Hi all. Just wondering if any of you would know how much fuel a Tenere 660 should carry crossing the Simpson via the Frenchline (mount dare to Birdsville) My mate and i are attempting a crossing in August this year unsupportted. His on a DR650 and myself on a Tenere 660. We are planning to take 3 days to cross it. Im thinking I should carry 2 x 10lt fuel cans plus my 23lt in tank a total of 43lt. Any advice would be greatly appreciatted.

What sort of fuel economy are you getting now. Last tank my 2010 XT 660Z used 18.12L to 370.5Km riding too and from work which is probably 80% 100Km/h. That is using Caltex Vortex 95.

I get about 45O km out of tank (23lt) maybe more but its the sand factor that im trying to work out. Im thinking of tanking 20lt in a jerry can giving me a total of 43lt. But i would love to know if anyone thinks this is enough or how much they would take.

I know there are lots of Simpson preparation threads over on advrider in the Oz section. Check out the sticky thread index or simply do a search.

btw, your calcs sound about right to me. Back in 2008 when I was planning a Simpson run (unrealised  ) I had figured on taking 40 litres on my DRZ.

Oh, and I want to see a ride report ! :D

i read an article last night on the simpson crossing of 2 guys one on a 690 ktm and dr 650 from mt dare to birdsville the ktm used 36 liters and the dr used 38 liters there km reading was said to be 515km so 1 liter takes you 13.55 km on the dr however mt dare to birdsville is actually 435km via french line/qaa and 495km via french-rig-waa-knolls-french-qaa . the french line has the most sand and dunnes ,i have crossed it many time but in a landcruiser hope to do it again this winter on my dr650 .The extra km these fellows did was because of the 50/70 km northern by pass of eyre creek during the wet 2010/2011

We crossed last year Birdsville to Mt Dare via French Line, then Hay River Track to Birdsville. I think it's easier from Mt dare to Birdsville as the dunes are steeper but shorter.
I had 26 lt + 16 lt in Jerry cans & I used 36 ltrs . Now 6 lts seems like a lot but when you have detours because of water/mud & you are looking at your tank emptying quickly it doesn't seem like much. i think that 42 ltr would be minimum.
The DR used 38 ltrs.

PS Keep it as light as possible as they are heavy bikes in the sand ( all bikes not just the Tenere)
